Scenography

Internationales Sommerfestival Kampnagel 2024

Thinking big, looking up: for the fourth time already, we conceived and realized the scenography for the International Summer Festival at Kampnagel. With this edition, we transformed the festival garden into a turquoise-colored forest made of stelae, aiming for the sky. Between the wooden tower-like structures we placed numerous seating areas and planters with trees — the stele constructions also formed their own paths in the midst of the forest of scaffolding, a pergola for strolling. For the production process we focussed on sustainable construction and made sure that 95% of all materials were used to be reused.

The visually impressive height of our modular scenography forest was being contrasted with turquoise-painted wood and apricot flags. These choices of color and form were play- and joyfully reminiscent of maritime aesthetics: in this way, we combined the height of the sight with the depth of the mind. For the latter, we explored how deep such thoughts can go by printing quotes by artists from the summer festival program on the wood.

As the sustainability focus was one particularly addressed already during construction, we designed a fitting process: with a meticulously planned production line, our work steps and the aesthetics of our clear festival garden design were referring to Kampnagel's industrial past. We deliberately disconnected this past by using bold, not cold colors, forms and designed a lounge-like space. Right here, in an industrial environment that we transformed into a colorful forest landscape, we invited visitors to share time lingering, talking, encountering.

Our stage and space concept Hohe Statiken (High Statics), comprising planning, process design, budgeting and construction, was part of the International Summer Festival 2024 at Kampnagel, which took place from 07.08. - 25.08.2024 in Hamburg. Invited artists and collectives included: Lucinda Childs, Lola Arias, Sibylle Peters & Heteraclub, Jeremy Nedd & Impilo Mapantsula, Teresa Vittucci, Sofie Royer, Douniah, Fuego, JAJAJA.
