SPECIAL EDITION

Due to Corona, strategies and means of infection prevention have significant impact on spatial designs, especially on public spaces. For Kampnagel’s International Summer Festival “Special Edition“ we therefore combined both functionality and aesthetics: distance, hygiene, prevention face a clouded, blurry vision. We designed 3 outdoor stages, the outer garden and the lounge space. Ready to open for performances, lectures, concerts, happenings. And of course: audience to join.

SPECIAL EDITION is an outdoor festival scenography designed for an area of more than 5.000 qm. Eye-catcher and visual blur at the same time. A light installation — an illuminated semipermeable synthetic glass framed in metal — worked as our center piece that invited people to shoot some Insta-worthy photos in proper distance. But the installation also made it possible to experience the blurry relationships and diffuse perception caused by the social effects of the current pandemic.

Large ruffled mesh curtains were our key material: catchy and blurry. They worked as functional corridors and beautiful visual teasers of what’s behind — revealing and covering simultaneously. With our easy-to-wipe materials and broad sidewalks we designed the festival garden space that — by meeting the current infection prevention standards — is also aesthetically dealing with this set limitations. Finally, our delicate expansive pink headpiece is our beloved prop. As a colorful highlighter and fashionable distance keeper.

We conceived and realized SPECIAL EDITION as our stage and interior design for the 2020 „Special Edition“ of Kampnagel’s annual International Summer Festival  (12. - 30.08.), featuring artists, collectives and theoreticians such as: Florentina Holzinger, Ligna, Oona Doherty, Kim Noble, Real Geizt, Oliver Zahn, Piazza, Yan Duyvendak / Kaedama / Dr. Philippe Cano, Gob Squad, Marlene Monteiro Freitas.
