JASCHA&FRANZ is a scenography duo based in Hamburg and Berlin. Founded by Jascha Kretschmann and Franz Thöricht, we design stage sets, installations, festival spaces, exhibitions, event scenographies and visual identities – for theatre, cultural events, public spaces and institutions.

Our work begins with the question of what a space should do: What encounters does it enable? What stories does it tell? What attitude does it convey? From these questions we develop spatial concepts that bring together architecture, graphics, light, sound and narration into a shared experience. From the first sketch to realisation, we think of projects as a whole – conceptually, creatively and practically.

We design spaces as situations and as scenery – spaces that provide orientation, spark curiosity, invite participation and bring people into relation with one another. The result is temporary architectures and walkable scenographic environments. We realise our projects together with a shifting network drawn from the fields of curation, construction, art and technology – assembling the right expertise for each undertaking and delivering projects of varying scales.

How we work

Every project begins with research – we engage with the cultural, historical, social and spatial context of a brief, examine existing narratives and look for connections to adjacent disciplines. From this we develop design strategies that respond to the specific site, audience and objectives of each project.

Our work covers the full lifecycle of a project: conception, design, planning, production, realisation and project management. We develop visual narratives in space and creative visions together with clients, produce technical drawings and visualisations, coordinate trades and calculate budgets. Material research, prototypes and test builds are as much part of our process as logistics and cost control. We accompany projects through to completion – and beyond, through documentation, evaluation and archiving.

Drawing on more than thirteen years of project experience, we have broad knowledge of materials, construction methods and production processes. We understand design as an open field: when a project calls for new perspectives, we collaborate with experts from art, craft, technology, science and culture.
