Jump into the Void

The transnational, Hamburg based ensemble Hajusom joined artistic forces with the immersion focussed performance collective JAJAJA: With their production Jump into the Void they invited their audiences to join a transitional show for experimenting with and celebrating the solidarity. Together with the audience, they enter an almost dystopian, cold and lonesome environment, a so called liminal space which soon transforms into a multifunctional stage for experimental acrobatics.

We transformed our space from a bland, coldhearted public office into a place for playful circus. With this functional cross-over of both spatial aesthetics, we resorted to a clear and at the same time fun formal language: the yellow floor as bold space-defining square, on which a two-part turquoise-green ring shape encloses a linear tower. This is followed by a big white rectangle, a violet circle in its centre. If there was no ring of fire for the missing lions to jump through, the performers in our bold mood shifting space invited the audience to do so — jump now, please, from one void to another. The irritatingly colorful look and feel of the space, which shifts from a dreary public office to a circus in love with form, ends in a playground space: the performers appropriated the objects and began to play with them until even the tower starts tottering. Spectacular gimmicks such as a moving smoke ring machine, a floating red circus tent and a large trampoline were not just entertaining props, but show the cold office turning into a circus turning into a playground, as an invitation to everyone to join. In the end: playing and living together is more fun.

The performance Jump into the Void by Hajusom & JAJAJA premiered on 24.10.2024 at Kampnagel in Hamburg.
